My Why….. My Way

Why do people become entrepreneurs? Answers to this question are varied – circumstances and paths differ, but I always knew I wanted to own a business. Timing is everything though. Just as in life, the work world requires time – for the student to become a graduate, to get the exciting first job, to learn, to “learn” you can dislike a job, to change roles for more learnings, to find the work you love, to be promoted and grow into new roles, to change industry and enter the business world as a founder. Time is needed to find your ‘Why’.

It was exactly 10 years between starting my first job and walking away from my last job as an employee. I had come to a crossroads and at the time, I had found the people and the work I loved but not the environment. As chance would have it, it’s the people you know who make all the difference. A business idea was born, and I was offered a chance to help grow a business. That was the beginning of my first experience as an entrepreneur which encompassed true friendship, true partnership and all the trimmings that a start-up should encounter. It was in that experience of learning to run a business, find clients, build networks, balancing the projects, the bank account and people whilst actually still doing the work, I found my path. My work culture was born, my unique work way was unearthed, and a management style was emulated. I also found there was something more that I sought – a way to uplift others by mentoring and coaching founders and businesses and then walking the business journey with them. I had found my purpose.

When the opportunity arose to start my own business, there was no hesitation or doubt – I would go it on my own. It was an opportunity to add value in ways that would be impactful, it was opening the door to “being more”.

“Being more” meant creating jobs, creating an environment to thrive in, driving an agenda to focus on the-not-so-visible, working with passionate leaders, contributing to their journeys in ways that are not just business related, finding partnerships, living the collaboration-over-competition principle. It also meant seeing the world change with innovation and being part of the rise of new alternative businesses that are more soul centred, heart led and purpose driven…”being more” meant breaking down the walls between professional and personal and bringing a holistic perspective to being a tech lawyer. This is my chance to make a positive impact, “to create more” than what a job can offer, to make the world a better place, to build the kind of company that I wanted to work at and at my core….. to do good.
